Thoughts from John Ennis, former CHSS Business teacher:

…will help as much as i can, be happy to, unfortunately ive lost contact except for bill tabel and len berkman...remember some stuff, especially graduation and john's speaking.  also remember fighting with teachers and administration that yaffe should be allowed to speak, even though he was valedictorian cause that asshole (even though i liked him and he was a good guy) gave nick 99's and 100's in language.  nick was taking about 4 or 5 languages.  Tom  matone was salud. and john #3 so seniors voted to have their choice of student speakers (trying to cut yaffe out)… i remember telling all seniors i could speak to that yaffe and tom matone SHOULD speak, they were no 1 and 2 in the class and it was unfair to penalize nick ...dont know if i affected the vote but kids did say what about john, who was pretty well liked.  i said, too bad.  anyway administration was pissed that nick got the most votes!  so it was nick & tom.  powers then decided to put john on (going to naval academy guy, didnt need a haircut) to counter balance nick....so at graduation nick shows up with sneakers!  back then that was a no no.  jack polo said, so what....funny how the right wing, conservative teachers were the ones that spoke up for the kids!!!   joe romano was told to review the speeches and they toned down what nick had to say...too, bad.   i do remember a few parents (last graduation to be held in auditorium) saying rather loudly, that kid should get a damn haircut.   well nick spoke, you kids (back then kids) cheered.  proud of you.  then tom spoke, every one cheered again, then John spoke, thanking parents and doing a God bless America and all of us thing.   very proud of him, especially 'grandson of immigrants' bit.  parents etc when nuts, cheering etc...have to remember lots of WWII and Korean vets in audience!  including me (Korea, not old enough for WWII).  plus when kids came down aisle, recessional guys leaning into aisle hugging john, shaking his hand etc...great moment for him (and for his folks!)  sorry to go on, but i was proud of you guys voting for nick and also cheering for him....he deserved both... God bless us all...

From John Ennis about Mr. Bernard Thomas, former CHSS English teacher:

Bernie was a great guy...another smoker...no, real cigarettes!   he was a funny person to me, and kids had a good time with him...realistic guy...could complain about the weirdest things, yet i always enjoyed gabbing with him...our conversations about administrators, counselors and very few kids, usually ended with me saying, in my best old Marine Corps voice, "ah, bernie f--k them all."   and we would laugh better then the kids!!!!  never judge other teachers (except for the real weirdos), bernie always struck me as a guy that liked kids......which SHOULD be the only prerequisite to teaching.....................thanks again, we will all say a big prayer for Bernie...
